✍️ Sketch Along #5: Drawing People in Motion
CORRECTION: VIP sketch-along #5 is happening TODAY at our daylight savings time: 6pm UK time, and other details below. Get ready to move those drawing fingers!
✏️Last week, we drew outfits galore using moodboards and collages. Here’s a peek of some of the sketches we made! ✏️

✏️What are we drawing?
This week we are drawing…
People in motion! Running, jumping, moving this way and that!
Trying to incorporate motion into a static illustration can be hard. But it’s amazing when you’re finally able to show fun, big movements in your children’s book drawings! So that’s why TODAY we’re practicing drawing big motions in our sketches.
✏️Drawing references?
We’ll be referencing from…
The Olympics! The Olympics on YOUTUBE specifically! I think there’s no better place to reference people in motion than at the Olympics. Whether it’s fencing, gymnastics, or the 100m race, you’re getting a good look at how people move in extreme ways.
YouTube is great for grabbing screenshots as you can move frame by frame in the videos and focus on teeny nuances in motion for your drawing. And you can spend ALL DAY going frame-by-frame watching Simone Biles do superhuman flips. It’s awesome!

Make sure to bring your big movement art supplies. I’m bringing along my colored pencils and a blunt 6B pencil to do lots of fast 30-second gesture drawings!
I’ll add the references and reference sources to the Discord sketch-along channel so you can continue practicing before and after our meetup. If you haven’t joined the now bustling TIAC Discord group, please sign up using the link at the bottom of this email.
